Recently the staff of the newspaper for the Diocese of Kansas City – St. Joseph in Missouri was sent a comparison between the current Grail Psalter and the new translation that has been submitted to Rome. The original article can be seen at The Catholic Key Blog. Abbot Gregory Polan, of Conception Abbey, sent a line by line comparison of Psalm 21. The comparison is shown below.
Part of the discussion that still needs to take place is the cost. The 1963 Grail was made available to the public at a minimum fee. In recent days it was often free to download. The new translation will be under the control of GIA and Conception Abbey. Since each Abbey uses their own arrangement of the Psalms for the Liturgy of the Hours, the cost of access to the new translation is still to be determined.
Why is this an issue for Oblates? Over the past year several Oblates have expressed an interest in developing a Breviary for Oblates based on the Abbey Psalter. Since the translation might be changing it makes sense to wait on the new translation. The cost of using them, however, may make the whole project cost prohibitive. We will just need to wait and see if Rome approves the translation.
