Free Will and God’s Grace are Necessary for Spiritual Progress

origen_webNeither that which lies within our own power apart from the knowledge of God, nor mere knowledge of God — if we have not also brought something to the good — compels us to make progress. We do not become vessels for honor or dishonor solely through that which lies within our power apart from the knowledge of God, nor does this occur apart from making full use of what is worthily placed within our power. By itself, God’s fashioning does not make someone honorable or dishonorable, as if he did not consider our free will that inclines us toward what is the better or what is worse to be a matter for distinction.
