Between here and there
Trapped between here and there,
in moments so swift as to be insubstantial;
a wave of nothing that we ride all our days,
in futures unknown and fate unsure.
So swift who can contain it,
our rapidity of flight through life,
today becomes far past in just a blink,
and one day we find ourselves old,
a stranger looking back from the mirror.
Young we remain in our aging bodies,
invisible and weighing nothing,
seeming to be substantial
in a world made of mist and clouds,
observing all that goes on,
as if our innermost part moves not,
as the universe expands ever faster,
our lives wind down,
cities die and nations fail,
yet we watch, observe, ponder,
and wonder what it is all about.
It is not easy being caught
between here and there,
for the past and future are longed for,
the present at times resisted and hated;
Will we ever find our true home?
